The World's Smallest Countries



1. Vatican City;
The Vatican City is the world's smallest state, being only around 0.44 km2 (110 acres) and a population of just over 800. Its currency is euro.  Vatican City was established as an independent state in 11 February 1929, when it was separated from Italy. Its official language is Italian. Vatican City is surrounded by Rome, Italy.



2. Monaco;
Monaco is the second smallest, and the most densely populated country in the world.  It has an area of 2.02 km2 (0.78 sq mi), and a population of 36,371. Its official language is French. The official religion of Monaco is Roman Catholicism. Its currency is euro.

3. Nauru;
             Nauru was known as Pleasant Island, is an island country in Micronesiain the South Pacific. Nauru is covering just 21 km2 (8.1 sq mi). With 9,378 residents, it is the second least-populated country after Vatican City. Nauru got independence in 31 January 1968. Its official language is Nauruan and English is also widely spoken language. Its currency is Australian dollar.

4. Tuvalu;
          Tuvalu is located in the Pacific Ocean, midway between Hawaii and Australia. They gained independence in 1978.  It comprises three reef islands and six true atolls. Its population is 10,544. Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world 26 km2(10 sq mi). Its official language is Tuvaluanand currency is Australian dollar.

5. San Marino;

Its size is just over 61 km2 (24 sq mi) with an estimated population of over 30,000. Its capital is the City of San Marino. San Marino has the smallest population of all the members of the Council of Europe. The country claims to be the oldest state in Europe, having been founded in the fourth century. Its official language is Italian and its currency is euro.

6. Liechtenstein;
            Liechtenstein is located on the Rhine River between Switzerland and Austria in the Alps. Its area is just over 160 square kilometres (62 sq mi), and it has an estimated population of 35,000. Its capital is Vaduz. The biggest town is Schaan. Official language of Liechtenstein is German and currency is Swiss franc.

7. Marshall Islands; 
The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands is an island country located in the northern Pacific Ocean. Official language is Marshallese. Total area is 181 km2 (70 sq mi) with the population of 68,480 people. Marshall Islands gained independence in 1986 and its currency is United States dollar.

8. Saint Kitts and Nevis;
Saint Kitts and Nevis located in the Leeward Islands, got independence from the United Kingdom in 19 September 1983 It is the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, in both area andpopulation and it gained independence in 1983. Its official language is English. Total population is 51,300 and area is 261 km2 (104 sq mi).

9. Seychelles;
            Republic of Seychelles has been independent of the United Kingdom since June 1976.  Seychelles, with an estimated population of 86,525, has the smallest population of any African state.  It has the highest Human Development Index in Africa and the highest income inequality in the world, as measured by the Gini index. Its total area is 451 km2 (174 sq mi), official language is French.

10. Maldives;
Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean consisting of a double chain of twenty-six atolls, oriented north-south, that lie between Minicoy Island and the Chagos Archipelago. The chains stand in the Laccadive Sea, about 700 kilometres (430 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka and 400 kilometres (250 mi) south-west of India. Its official language is Maldivian. Total area is 298 km2 (115 sq mi) and population is 328,536.
