Leo X, born Giovanni di Lorenzo de 'Medici was the ruler of the Roman Catholic
Church from 1513 to 1521. The second son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, the ruler
of the Florentine Republic (now Florence). He became a cardinal in 1489. and was
elected pope 1513th. During his papacy Martin Luther launched the Protestant
Reformation. He borrowed and spent very much. Reportedly said, "God has
given us the papacy, let us enjoy it." During his reign he made great
progress in the completion of the basilica of St. Peter. He died in 1521 and
was buried in Rome.
