The island name Langkawi literally means "reddish borwn eagle" in colloquial Malay. Helang is eagle in Malay term which is abbreaviated to "Lang". Kawi on the other hand means "colour reddish brown". Langkawi which also means Jewel of Kedah is given as the island's name on 2008. Langkawi Permata Kedah is the Malay word for "Jewel of Kedah".
