If you hear about dress made of milk it sounds very crazy, but it’s true aGerman biologist and fashion designer, Anke Domaske, has made a fabric entirely from milk which cannot be used for consumption, by extracting the protein from milk and then converting it into fibres much like cotton or wool. It is named as Qmilk fiber.
The process of making fibre from milk takes very short time, it means you don’t have to go through from the long procedure of growing cotton then making fabric from it. For the production of fibre for one dress using milk, requires only 1 hour is needed. Isn’t it amazing :)
Another advantage is that very little amount of milk is used, approximately 6 litres are needed to make a dress. The fabric feels similar to silk and is supposed to be odourless. It can be washed or dried like cotton.
However, Qmilk fiber is made from 100% renewable resources. it is more environment friendly than cotton and synthetics, and after the dermatological tests it is proved that is soothing to people with skin allergies because no chemicals are added in this fabric. It is antibacterial, biodegradable and leaves no traces.
Background;
Founder of the company is Anke Domaske, she was searching for chemically untreated clothing for her stepfather with cancer. Eventually milk proteins came to her interest. Those had already been processed to textiles in the 1930s, but the fibres were treated with various chemicals and produced in a complex process which was not of much use.
In April 2011 the Qmilch GmbH was founded. There now are a group of companies – Qmilch IP GmbH, Qmilch Holding GmbH and Qmilch Deutschland GmbH – which are engaged in the production and development of biopolymers, based on milk proteins and other natural and renewable raw materials.
